Unracking G-Brick - hinnersd - 10-27-2021

Anyone know how to unrack a G-Brick (from a 3000 series hour-glass rack) or where I could find the documentation on how to do it?   It looks like there are rack bolts I can remove but they are under the front covers and I can't figure out how to remove the cover.

SGI never published that kind of information, if you look in their manuals it always says Warning: Only an SGI system support engineer (SSE) can add or replace a (fill in the blank).

Hi Hinnersd,

I have a G-Brick.

Mine came as a bare chassis, not in a rack.

It was not bolted in at the front, rather it was and is now held in place via steel "shroud" in back.
The "shroud" allows it to be held in place via the mounting rail in the rear of the rack (pics here)

Before putting mine back into a rack I tried to remove the front panel with no success.

It looked like to get the front off, you have to pull out all the boards from the chassis and see if there were some screws holding on the front panels, that are only accessing via rear internals.

This looked a bit difficult so I gave up trying to get the front panel off.

Are you sure the chassis is bolted at the front ?

I put mine back into the rack by just sliding it in from the front on steel slider mounting rails.

BTW I am looking for extra RM11 for my G-Brick ...

I tried to remove the front panel as well on my un-racked gbrick. I agree, I don't think it comes off without disassembling basically everything. The top part looks like it slides into place, but it slides in the wrong direction and is blocked by the internally-bolted bit. Weird design! Makes sense that it's held up by the rear though; I believe it's rather rear-heavy, and that's the piece I'd want closest to the actual rack bolts.

@hinnersd can you post a bunch of pictures of how it's attached in your rack? I don't think I've seen any in a "stock" install, at least nothing with detail.

SGI designed their racks to be difficult for the end users to manipulate, that way their field service department made more money, typically a LOT more. Apple is worse though, they make their stuff impossible for even them to take apart.

To get the front fascia panels removed, first remove the metal "infinite Reality 3" (or 4) badge. It attaches magnetically, so just gently pull it off. There should be a machine screw behind the badge that goes through both the upper and lower fascia panels, holding them in place.

thank you for revealing this gem of information (sheepish grin), I am so glad I gave up on trying to take off my g-brick front panel....

Hi Raion,

thanks very much for offer, IRIX Network  has become a very valuable resource for us SGI revivalists, but after what happened with Nekochan I decided to keep stuff local...

With a bit of luck if a few people look at the picture, the magic of web content cache'ing will make performance acceptable.

I will also complain to Internet provider with feedback on link speed ;-)
