What you get when you pair an R12K@400MHz with a V12 in an SGI Octane2! - Irinikus - 10-09-2021

How does a midrange MIPS CPU perform when paired with a High-End Odyssey V12 Graphics card?

Let's find out!

Oh no! Only a single 400. Using my V12 with the dual 400 has been nice. I should see how that impacts Quake, but I think the multi-threading boost is minor at best?

Quake III is unfortunately only single threaded!

It would be interesting to see if you see a difference though!

Once I get my hands on an EMXI graphics unit, the V12 will return to my other Octane and I'll run these tests again!

Fwiw, I did port a newer version of quake iii and it ran a little better, but one flaw was my library installs were fucked so it wouldn't be distributable. I have my notes somewhere so I'll grab an old version of ioquake iii around the same vintage and try again at some point

Yes - that would be cool to see @Raion. I wish I knew this stuff and I'd spend a considerable amount of time porting games. I don't even play them so much, but I enjoy the retro. Playing stuff like Hexen, Blood, Unreal Tournament etc on an old XP machine or using GOG is fun, but I'd love it more running on these SGI beauties.

Cheers all!
