Terminal mode between Sun and Mac - valejacobo - 09-25-2021
Hi guys, I'm on the verge of purchasing a Ultra 10 workstation for a real steal of a price (thanks poor local economy I guess?). The problem is that it only the workstation comes, no keyboard, mouse, no nothing else.
I've read in the service manual that without a keyboard, the machine goes into remote terminal mode, so I have to make a db25 to db9 null modem cable to be able to use it remotely, not a problem at all. The thing is that I don't own another Sun, and the manual specifies to run tip hardwire as a command on the terminal end in another Sun.
Googling a bit I've found that some people use a Windows machine as the terminal, wich I already have in my trusty W2K AcerPower, and a hackintoshed HP Z420 wich also comes with a serial port which seems to be recognized under /dev.
Anyone here has had any success runing its Sun as a terminal from another non-Sun machine? I don't have a problem waiting a bit and buying a Type 5 keyboard and mouse combo, wich I'll have to end up doing anyway, but It'll be nice to test the Ultra as soon as it arives.

I've used minicom from Linux to connect to my Suns with no problem. I'm sure anything will do as a terminal with proper configuration. The tip command is most likely just an example of how to configure another Sun, not a requirement.

Yeah, I've never had any issues connecting to Sun machines over the serial port from something else. OpenBoot is just a Forth environment with a BIOS attached, no specialty client software required.

Nice, thanks a lot guys, seems very encouraging, so as soon as the sellers answers me or I receive my paycheck wichever comes first I'll shell out about 27 USD for the Ultra 10
