My first post and presentation -

Hi, i'm valejacobo on most forums, but my friends call me Valito.
I've been a long time lurker but first time poster here, and a fan of SGI workstations since i was in elementary school.
I'm currently owner of some vintage Macs and I'm a UNIX workstations/vintage computers/anime thighs
connoisseur.
Luckly my IT work allows me a fair amount of free time to lurk around in forums, and learn more everyday about yesteryear computers and hardware; and my audiovisual work, which includes VFX, editing, compositing, and some more puts me in a perfect position to crave an SGI even more since I learnead about this beasts capabilites back in the day.
I'm currently in the hunt for a Octane2 to fully deck out, but sadly due to my geographical location, there's close to none in my country, and even less for sale, so I'll have to dig into international shipping when I'm about to buy one. Any tips or advice regarding international purchases is allways welcome anyway!
So if you need help anything Mac or graphics software related, don't doubt to PM me, I'll be glad to answer!

Welcome to the club!
I hope you will have a good time!
And indeed, I come from the neighbouring Brazil and nice things are very hard to come by. Moreover, when they do, they cost 10x more. =\

Funnily, I've found quite a lot of SGI stuff over in Brazil. If it were in Mainland China my boss said we could've done something about the shippment since my company imports a lot from them, but only exports to the countries around. So only paying a lot more by customs if I go the Brazil route.

Welcome to the forums.
I think you're our first Argentine poster. Even though I'm based out of the US I come from a Spanish and Portuguese background so I am somewhat familiar with the situation in South America though I haven't been able to visit yet in my life.
In regards to your endeavor to purchase an octane I encourage you to keep an open mind and even consider a lower end model because while there are benefits to going with a top end model it's going to be incredibly expensive in most cases because of markup and scalping that I've been seeing recently. It's also entirely possible to take a teal Octane and upgrade it physically to a much higher configuration. I already have shipped stuff to Australia and the Philippines before so as far as helping you obtain something I don't mind should you require my assistance as I do have a couple of octane's here that I might be willing to get rid of for the right price and for the right person.
One thing to keep in mind is that the systems are not at all like Mac OS since I can see a significant portion of your background is in those systems. Expect something much more similar to Solaris or unixware. If you don't have any exposure my next suggestion would be one of the three bsds although there are significant differences from a programming standpoint and organizational standpoint due to divergences between system v and BSD.
When you're ready I suggest posting a wanted ad after you've read our rules on marketplace posts and you figured out what a budget should be. Other than customs one thing to keep in mind is that if your currency is devalued still which might be the case I haven't checked up on the situation in several years but that can result in you not getting a good exchange rate from something like US dollars or euros

Hi, and thanks for the kind words!
I've seen a teal Indigo2 in Brazil and at a fair price conversion included and all, so that's an option that's been on my mind since I saw it. I've had some encounters with Solaris so far, and I'm about to purchase a Sun lot from a local dealer when I get a work invoice paid, since I can keep a Ultra 30 that I've been looking for a while, and restore, clean, format and sell the rest since I'm not much into the other models of the lot but the price is really a steal (About 127 u$d for 4 workstations plus cables, keyboards, mouses, cables and more misc. accesories).
Regarding an Octane, I don't mind a lower model, since I can upgrade later, and enjoy right now, but alas I've spent too much on old computers last months, so that'll have to wait until a couple of months into the future; at least I'll learn all there is to about purchasing an used one and prices I should expect to pay.

Just keep in mind we don't quote prices here, so you can't ask "How much should I pay for X system" or anything like that.
However, you can ask "how much did you historically pay for your systems" and people can tell you what they bought theirs for.
