Sun Fire V250 -
Irinikus - 08-12-2021
My Sun Fire V250's finally in my possession, and it's great to see that it boots! (It doesn't have a drive installed at this point though!)
It's allot smaller than I expected it to be! (Here's how it compares to an SGI Tezro in size)
I will be ordering the following parts from WildFire Systems in the UK in the upcoming months:
hard drive and sled for the machine
an XVR-1200
another CPU
8GB of RAM
a PC card
a tape drive
The machine is currently very low specced, but it wont be for long! (In the case of a machine such as the V250, the chassis is very hard to come by, but the upgrades are luckily much easier to source!)

I look forward to playing around with it!
I just have one question, that hopefully someone can answer:
The XVR-1200 isn't officially qualified to run in this machine, only the XVR-100 and XVR-600 are officially! The mainboard is basically identical to that of a SUN Blade 2500, which is officially qualified to run the XVR-1200.
Is there any reason at all as to why an XVR-1200 wouldn't run in this machine? (It has PCI slots with the required specs!)
I am also going to buy a second power supply for the machine, taking its wattage to 920W, so power shouldn't be a problem!

My best guess would be size constraints? There are certain XVRs that dont fit in my Ultra machines.

Thanks for the input, but I doubt it, as it has more than enough space lengthwise to take full length cards and it's also deep enough to take "tall" cards.
I will order an XVR-600 together with the XVR-1200, just in case.
My personal opinion is that the XVR-1200 wasn't given as an option, as this machine predated it by a year.

Also, the XVR-1200 was a pretty powerful (and expensive) workstation graphics card. The V250 was intended as a server that would normally run headless or maybe with minimal graphics capability. I suspect that Sun didn't bother testing such a configuration since it didn't make sense for their product positioning.

Your right! So I'll have to do some configuration testing then!
