My first render - Shiunbird - 07-12-2021

I have a free evening and not much energy for anything serious, so I decided to try out my first render.
With thanks to Intuition for the excellent tutorial on Lightwave 5.6.

Edit: ugh, struggling to attach, so, well, check here.

The background textures were created using Fyre on my Power Mac G5 running Debian 10 (this machine is quickly becoming my daily driver).

I need to optimise the lights, because this basic draft render took 15 minutes on my Octane. I think I went too overboard (walls don't need to be reflexive, for example) and there are things to remove to improve render times without affecting too much the effect I want to achieve.

Here is the image he linked. Pretty cool colors and reflections. Smile

Looks like you have motion blur too. Probably not necessary and will end up cleaner.

Looking good! Smile

Thank you!
Depth of field, actually, not motion blur. It looked very weird without it, too flat and unnatural.

I redid the backgrounds to reduce the gap between the edges of the cubes, added more spheres and optimised the lights to reduce render times. I also find out that if I use textures larger than 2560x2560 for the walls, the render times increase a lot (perhaps because of my graphics?) - the preparation phase processing the textures takes much longer, so I reduced them to 2048x2048 to remain within the realms of power of 2.

So my next steps are increasing the gamma of the blue cube face, because it's barely visible, and then animate. I want to have the camera orbit each sphere in a sort of gravitational slingshot effect.

very neat!!
