O2000 / onyx2 PSU fail (?) - coldbug - 06-12-2021
Hi,
the PSU of my O2000 keeps failing from time to time. Could have to do with the higher temperatures, as I didn't notice it to happen in winter when I got it.
It randomly switches off, sometimes 10sec after powering up, sometimes after 1h of operation. The system displays 'power fail'.
Switching it on/off again (key) resets the PSU. I thought I ask around before I swap the PSU in case this is a known issue, or is it maybe the fan tray (temp sensor?)
Would also appreciate guidance on in what price range spare PSUs are traded.

Perhaps. If you need PSUs, I do have some spare, I'm just in the US so shipping will potentially suck.

"The red LED (also known as the Fault indicator) lights up whenever the power supply shuts off because of insufficient air flow, or when a system over temprature shutdown occurs."
I've previously seen some temperature messages in the console, but ignored them because they never led to shutdown.
Weird. I tried to replicate it. It said PS FAIL, green goes off, red stays off, amber stays on. After key on/off green/red stay off but selftest continues.
EDIT: this case with red led off seems not in the owner's guide. I'll try to repace the PSU first.
MSC higher fan speed indicator is on.
I'll connect the diagnostics console to see if this gives additional info.
This time I got the Ambient over- temperature LED on MSC and FAN FAIL.
Probably something with the fan tray. Will investigate further.
Diagonostics console doesn't yield any more info so far.
I've changed my hypothesis from PSU to fan tray. PSUs in my experience blow out at once.
sgi specifies +35° ambient max, and I am way below it, but who knows, usually servers are operated in an ac environment.

Also: You can try to remove the PSU and clean the midplane stiffeners up.
Sometimes there are dust aggregates between those two. This can cause overheat.

Are there any known repair shops for the origin 2000/onyx2 psu's out there? (I think I have a dead one). I've replaced a few capacitors in my time, but I don't really have the time or desire to crack this one open to start looking into it. It seems it may be overly complicated.
If not a shop then the cherokee schematics?

If a fan fails it will throw the rest on max speed to avoid cooking the system. If all fans work the system should be considerately more quiet under normal conditions.
A loaded O2K / Oyx2 can engage high fan speed on a summer day if your room is not airconditioned. It's turning a kilowatt of power into heat so i wouldn't mess with the fans. You need enough static pressure to keep sufficient airflow. Noctuas won't do.
