Wanted: Onyx4 GN or GN2 graphics brick. - mopar5150 - 05-30-2021

Hey Guys,
I am looking for an Onyx4 graphics brick to try and see why these work without an IP module but an O350 with a V12 wont.

Located in Southern California.
Can pay with paypal and I will cover the fees. Not sure what they are worth so $250-350??

I have lots of SGI stuff for trade as well. Indigo Iris keyboard and IP, quad 1Ghz IP modules, IO9s, O350s and parts, Altix 350 dual 1.6Ghz IP module, O200 chassis, CPUs and parts.

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

I did a lot of playing around with this using the Onyx4 setup with ATI graphics you sent me a couple of years ago.

My objective was to try to see if I could get 1GHZ O350 with V12 going by using chassis without CPU modules.

My conclusion was that to do this you need to have one of the "CPU Less" CPU boards for this to work.

These are also know am "Memory Expansion Modules" I believe, as while they do not have CPU's you can install memory, potentially V12 / DMS and PCI cards and RAM in them.

As I never got my hands on one of the "CPU Less" modules I was not able to confirm this.

Cheers,

jwhat/John

I have two of the Memory Expansion Modules. You can (and actually must) install memory in them. A V12 will also work with them, as I can confirm from my own Tezro expansion chassis setup. The PCI riser attaches to the 2U Interface board, so that's available, too.

If you're trying to get an Origin 350 with a V12 to work with just a Memory Expansion Module, I'd think that should work just fine. I don't know that any system will work without a node board at all.

Hi Kaigan,

great to know this was confirmed, so it would be possible to have 4 x 1GHZ Rackmount Tezro with V12 (but no DM3 as this would need yet another chassis).

With the "Memory Expansion Module" is this connected via Numalink port or the XIO port ?

EDIT: Read the manual .... it is Numalink port ;-)

Cheers from Oz,

Yep, it's the NUMAlink port. And yeah, you can absolutely have a 4x 1 GHz Tezro rackmount using two nodes. That's actually what the expansion chassis was designed for, since SGI didn't want to put the quad-1 GHz node board in with a V12, likely due to heat issues. I split the duties of my main O350 node between the Tezro and Onyx4 configs using two drives with separate IRIX installations on them. I just swap the NUMAlink cables over depending on which one I want to use and boot from the appropriate drive.

This is the exact configuration I have and it works. The bummer was not being able to put my current serial number on it.
My most used SGI is a dual 700 V12 rack tezro, so I figured I would just make the 4x1g and expansion V12 chassis a system and transfer my serial number so my software would still work. No luck.  Photo below.

Fortunately, another member is setting me up with the ATI parts to build a GN2! So this adventure will continue once I get the parts.
