Philips Hue (Color Changing Lights) - Raion - 05-02-2021

I got on this trend recently. I have to say I'm pretty damn impressed. I just am missing one thing I guess, and that's apps that I can use on NetBSD or something else to control them!

But overall, I've noticed better sleep quality, less eyestrain, and it's just damn convenient. I can recommend them (I currently only have them in a few rooms of the house, my roommates are not as appreciative of them as I am!!)

Cameron Kaiser (aka former Nekochan user ClassicHasClass) wrote a Perl script for controlling them.  It should run on NetBSD and maybe even your SGIs with a suitable Perl version and cURL.

It does work on the IRIX 6.5 very well. I used Cameron's script on my SGI O2 (with Perl from Nekoware, I think - I no longer use Hue stuff for some reasons).

I've got a couple of them. I also have a Homey to tie various "domains" of home automation together.

I wish someone would make wall switches that integrate with our existing Busch-Jaeger / Busch-Duro 2000 switch gear, but "talk" Hue or Z-wave. I want consistent switches on the walls, I want them to work like you'd expect them to, and it's unlikely I will ever replace all lights with smart lights. It's stupid to have to explain to visitors how to switch the lights with an app -- apps and smart controls are an extra, not a replacement for basic functionality.

I personally can't stand bright lights and most regular lights are too bright for me. I've put hue lamps into an ikea vidja standing lamp. It's set to turn on automatically at sundown and turns to night lamp mode after eleven. It works nicely.

Ahoj Jirko,

I was thinking of buying a set of Philips Hues. Why don't you use them anymore?

Saulo

Hello Saulo,

It was not related to their functionality. We re-arranged our flat and now use different lighting (a more traditional one) in our home office room. We also have tried to reduce modern technologies we use daily.
