SoftImage|3D: Rendering SGI animations on modern PCs? -
GameBreaker64 - 04-29-2021
I'm looking to do some 3D modeling work on the Indy I'll be getting next Thursday, but finding the right software is difficult.
My main goal is to model and animate something in 3D on the SGI, and send off rendering duties to my current laptop to speed things up. SoftImage|3D seems like an intuitive software for what I want to do with the machine, but I'm unaware of any way to render my work on a modern computer. Any help?

SoftImage AFAIK didn't have any modern releases so you're down to importing your work into another program like blender and then rendering it there, then hopefully exporting anything back you want.

I don't know what rendering software you'd use on the Indy if it's an R4000? (Maybe an early version of Soft Image.)
Blender does not work on an R4000!
I use Blender on my Mac for external rendering, as it works pretty well and it's free!

Yeah, I'm probably going to go with SoftImage|3D 3.9.x or something for work on the SGI. Someone on YouTube actually uploaded a couple of tutorials for the software specifically on IRIX.

Cool!

To clarify I meant exporting your work to blender on a modern PC.

I supose you could install softimage3D Windows version (probably in a NT VM). I have 3.8 and 4.0 for Windows. I haven't actually tried to install it in a long time, not sure if it would work on Win7 or 10
edit - I just installed Softimage 3.8 and 4.0 on windows 10 - they both work once the resolution is changed to a supported res (1600x1200 for example). 4.0 on my system had the top bar sort of blacked out but I was still able to switch modules
