Help getting started with HP-UX -
Shiunbird - 04-10-2021
Hello everyone,
Any tips on how to get started with a cold install for my C8000?
The seller provided me a few ISOs (the workstation comes with a license in the box for TCOE, but not the media).
None of them is bootable.
I burned the ones at
http://hpux.irixnet.org/hp-ux/11iv1/ (Operating Environment March 2003) but they kernel-dump and the system restarts not much after it starts loading. I think they are not compatible (even though 11iv1 should be as far as I know).
Any tips would be much appreciated.

Having installed a fair share of HP-UX v1s, there's really no trick. Just put the media in, boot as required per the manual and start the installation.
From the log you posted, it seems either a media problem or faulty hardware. C8000 workstations were kind of a hybrid between workstation and server, which is why HP-UX v2 can be installed on them. So in fact, it may be a media problem, requiring the exact supoprted versions for the workstation. Supported versions for C8000 are MTOE and TCOE as per
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/539653/Hp-C8000.html#page=2-manual
I don't have these OEs, so you would need to get your hands on these somehow.
But to be clear: HP-UX installs are one of the smoothiest unix installations I've ever done, far more than Irix, for example.
Good luck

The roadblock I ran up against with installing HP-UX (this was 10.x, mind you) was that it does
not cope well with any install-time customization more advanced than disk partitioning. I spent
days banging my head against the wall until I finally just gave up and went with a plain default install...at which point it worked perfectly fine. There were piles of options in the installer, but apparently nobody had bothered to make sure that you'd still get even a minimally functional system if you changed them from the defaults.

It is important to remember that the PA-8800 and PA-8900 CPUs used in the C8000 didn't come out until 2004 and 2005, respectively. I suspect the kernel panic you're seeing is due to an unsupported CPU, since all of the media in the collection you linked to is earlier than that date.

Thank you!
I've approached the seller and he said he provided me the wrong images. I'm downloading the new one now.
Fingers crossed!
On another note...
Yes - it is like the IntelliStation 285 that I had. Much more server-y than workstation-y.
The C8000 is MUCH quieter, though.
When I go back for another AIX box, I will probably go for a 185. The lack of Altivec on the 285 makes a few things very painful. I want to be able to build a few things there, but also want the boxes to be useful as daily drivers.
The C8000 with Debian 10 is a delight. I'm trying to figure out Gentoo and I will leave the second disk for HP-UX.

Hello everyone!
I am up and running. The seller hooked me up with proper media. I just did the first boot. It looks exactly the same as AIX.
CDE complains I am not running the optimal drivers, but I still haven't installed TCOE or the FireGL drivers.
Once I get this done, I will try to build my benchmark tools. If they build without any modifications between Mac, Linux, x86, PPC, HP-UX and PA-RISC (it's strictly pure C and basic OpenGL libraries), then I am confident they are good for prime-time and I hope they will build fine everywhere else.
Any tips, let me know.

Hey!
I just unpacked my brand new C8000. I have a TCOE agreement printed in the box, but I have no OS media... Is there any chance anybody could point me at the right direction? Thanks in advance!
