TenFourFox is Over - Raion - 03-31-2021

http://tenfourfox.blogspot.com/2020/04/the-end-of-tenfourfox-and-what-ive.html

I don't like treating the forums like a personal blog, but I just wanted to write out my thoughts to ClassicHasClass/Cameron K, in case he chances by here and reads this.

Firstly, I'd like to thank him for being a forerunner in the "running new software on obsolete platforms". While not the first, and certainly not the last, he's probably the most stubborn and notable for his efforts to keep PowerPC Macs alive. While I personally don't use them or benefit from his work anymore (I did use it in my teen years though!) I did want to thank him anyways. The idea that Nekoware II or any of the other stuff I, or anyone else here is working on, would have gotten as far without Cameron's work is nonsense.

I hope you come around here man - you were one of the good Nekochanners that never made the hop over. While we didn't always agree on things, I appreciate everything you ever took to the time to write and I hope that Talos II is treating you well. It's a good time to quit - Firefox is basically in the trash dump now. I don't mean to be a douche or act all elitist, but it's really gone down hill and while I like Waterfox and Pale Moon/Basilisk for what they are, they're not Firefox anymore. Mozilla has become an activist organization instead of a competitor, Edge has been turned into Webkit, and the whole browser standard shit has come full circle with Microsoft again using someone else's product to piggyback its code (IE, for those who don't know, started off as a fork of Mosaic).

Take a long rest, and while I'm not confident someone will take up your torch, know you were appreciated by thousands across the world for your hard work. I certainly will not forget, TenFourFox when I was a 16 year old and got pissed that Firefox stopped updating on my Leopard-running Powerbook G4.

Cameron many times announced that he will stop his efforts at some point. I still cannot understand how he managed to be able to survive for so long time. He was a Nekochan member (with the nick Classilla) - if I'm not mistaken he has a Fuel and possibly other machines.

I really don't know how to thank him enough for his work.

It was ClassicHasClass. That's his handle on most retrocomp forums.

RE: TenFourFox is Over - GeekLucanis - 04-01-2021

iirc, he has a 900mhz Fuel, Maxed out Indigo2 Impact, and one of the only other people I know of with Indy, Presenter and Indybag set.

He has a ton of stuff. There's a picture of his impressive setup in his floodgap page.

A great person, indeed.

I'm sad to see it go but I'm also surprised the project lasted as long as it did. The last version should be mostly usable for a long time.

It's sad to see it go, that means most of us PowerPC G4 users are left with either an obsolete version, or in hopes of a new developer coming through. And FF was the only browser that could easily get around the hardware limitations of that era (Chrome will just eat all of your ram and HCF the cpu altogether). Well, my PowerBook would get relegated to be a forum machine then.

I absolutely loathe Apple products, but I respect the craft of someone like Cameron (even if he apparently hasn't really made any efforts to chat with me in years). I especially have antipathy for the PowerMac G5 since people who are like "TALOS TOO EXPENSIVE, BUY G5" and I'm like "That's like saying a modern Camry is too expensive, buy a 30+ year old Cressida" in car lingo. You can't compare the two.

But yeah, I respect that he is among the few who kept an ecosystem alive, and without TFF now, that ecosystem is likely to die a slow and painful death.

I mean, one of the reasons I indulged myself and went with a classic Volkswagen when I moved to California was because you can't get a car that isn't a total junker for less than $2k around here anyway...
