Indy - No Video - Sprint - 12-28-2020

Hi all,

I am German and my English is not that good, I wish to apologize forefront and please, bear with me.
I am new in this forum and but not entirely to SGI, even though I did not use them for nearly two decades. In the early 2000 I stored two Indy Indy in my parents garage, and after that time, one's PSU and motherboard is not working anymore and from the second I do not get a video output. I surely replaced the clock chip and I do hear the jingle. I connected a R5000SC and a R4600 CPU module onto the board, both deliver the same result. I also tried a 8Bit and a XZ graphics card, all combinations, with 256MB and 128MB RAM installed, I just get the jingle. No hard drive starting, no video out. Do I miss something?
I would be very happy if someone could help me here, as I do not know where I should look next to solve the problem. Does anybody know what could cause this and point me in the right direction?

Many thanks in advance

Sprint

Let us try the basics:

1. Please post the monitor model you are using and describe the monitor video cable too. You need a known working video cable, SUN 13w3 -> VGA adapters often sold on eBay don’t work. However SUN 13w3 -> 13w3 cables connected to SGI monitors do tend to work.

2. Disconnect all the wires to all Hard drives, see if it boots to firmware. Hard drive is not needed to start machine, hard drive may have an electrical problem that is causing startup problems or power supply is too weak. Either way simplify the system and try again.

Good luck.

Hi Weblacky,

thanks for the quick response! I unplugged the SCSI cable from the main board. Same result. I use an unnamed 13W3 to VGA connector, which might have been working in the past for SUN machines. The monitor I am using is a SAMSUNG SyncMaster 940N which provides Sync-On-Green Pos. & Neg polarity. I do believe, that this would actually work, as I bought it recommended and very suitable for SGI machines.

I will try to find a better connector. Could you recommend one?

Many thanks

Hi,
You may have misunderstood, I said power short, so please disconnect the hard drive power, unplugging the scsi cable will not prevent a power short.

Also, yes, if you’re using an unknown adapter then bingo! Samsung syncmasters are great SGI monitors, often. So likely not the monitor. For new people I highly advise you go on eBay and buy the universal 13w3 cable offered there, I have 6 of them, would love more.

I think Indys output both SOG and separated H/V sync at once, so try both settings and see what happens on the DIP switches. But these are great cables. I’m like 99% sure your small adapter isn’t correct for SGIs. Buy this like $20 cable and get on with life. If you have the positive jingle boot up sound, then you should be solid to go

Cheers!
