Confusing fuel - KEK - 12-18-2020

tell me what is this?   :FuelBlue:

It’s a fuel prototype that’s in @jan-jaap’s collection!

It seems all photos have gone up in smoke with the demise of Nekochan and I also lost a hard disk with SGI related photos since, so I'll have to go back to the master backups and sort out all SGI related photos again   Undecided

Here's one I could quickly find from around 2008:

You can paint your Fuel but that doesn't make it more valuable or turn it into a prototype.

I never bought this system. The company I work for was contracted by SGI many years ago to support some of our hardware in IRIX by porting the device drivers and software stack. For this work they sent us this system. The system stayed behind, SGI went bankrupt (twice) and abandoned MIPS/IRIX, and at some point we cleaned up storage and it ended up at my place.

Yeah, prototypes are distinct from their final forms, and can be quite different. The only one I have is the multilink adapter prototype. Aside form the transparent case, it's pretty much the same externally (though it has a second power port, not sure what it's for), but the board itself is arranged different, with one of the ICs replaceable, and a good bit of hand-soldered patches. As for functionality, all I can say it is perfectly matches the red LED and no-output of a final-product dead multilink adapter.

Also, just for info the plastic on jan-jaap's prototype Fuel is actually coloured blue - it isn't spray painted or anything. SGI did a few odd prototypes and specials throughout their time. I remember a couple of people back on Nekochan that had transparent O2s for instance.

Yeah it's really not worth painting a fuel. You can do it, but it's not gonna increase your value. In fact, to me that would destroy any resale value it had.

RE: Confusing fuel - KEK - 12-22-2020

ah ok :(

RE: Confusing fuel - Raion - 12-22-2020

Yeah unfortunately you won't be able to increase your value. That's the only one that has ever surfaced, so a sudden appearance of another would almost certainly be a fake.

The color looks cool though, I'll give it that.
