Github Takes down Youtube-DL at behest of RIAA - Raion - 10-23-2020

If you want more proof for why we shouldn't rely on corporate RCS/VCS systems:

https://github.com/github/dmca/blob/master/2020/10/2020-10-23-RIAA.md

The idea that a project can be wiped off the face of the earth over this is retarded, and while I understand that dmca is something that affects everybody including small scale providers, I think it's telling when they're actually taking it seriously and they don't have a human actually going HMM!

Frankly, digital millennium copyright act is a travesty but even more so knowledge and code are not things that can be exploited.

What I find mind boggling is that just because youtube-dl can be used for some purposes that infringe on copyrights, they assume infringement is its only purpose.  I can think of plenty of non-infringing uses for it, too.  But apparently those don't count for anything.

Even moreso is that GitHub complied with the order and probably actually went through sending the counterclaim.

Again I'm not entirely surprised because they are a big corporation owned by Microsoft but personally if I was managing this I would probably tell them to go shove it and contact the electronic frontier foundation. We have ways of dealing with this that aren't compromising our integrity as software platforms and developers. But hopefully this illustrates why I am so incredibly wary of GitHub. I have in the past pointed out other management practices I considered to be out of line but this definitely takes the cake as far more important.

Apparently youtube-dl was re-instated a couple of weeks ago, although I just found out today.  There's a bit of info on their own website (https://youtube-dl.org/) mentioning that GitHub did stand up for them and pointing to GitHub's write-up about the situation:  https://github.blog/2020-11-16-standing-up-for-developers-youtube-dl-is-back/.  It's an interesting look at what all has to happen behind the scenes.

Things are moving slowly but in what appears to be a positive direction.
