Infinite reality 4 Quake 3 performance -
Irinikus - 08-10-2020
I finally managed to get down to Cape Town for one night and have managed to successfully test the RM11's that I purchased from Jan-Jaap earlier this year!
Here are some pics of the RM11's themselves:
Here's the Display that it shows as it posts, showing that it's indeed Infinite Reality 4 with two raster managers installed:
Here's the PROM menu:
Here's Quake 3 running with one RM11 installed:

I'm very happy to report that they work!!!
I was really hoping that they'd give me at least 60FPS and they didn't disappoint, so I'm very happy!!!
IR4 is unquestionably the most powerful graphics solution SGI offered!!!
Just for reference, this Onyx2 currently has 4xR14K@500MHz installed, with only 1GB of RAM and IR4 graphics, and it absolutely pile-drives the Tezro with 4xR16@1GHz, 6GB of RAM and a V12 installed!!!!! (In both image quality and FPS!!!)

You should really consider giving your Onyx2 a custom paint job!!!
Just be aware that flatting the plastics takes an extreme amount of elbow grease!!! (Allot of work!!!)

Nice, gaming on a million dollar system

Does the timedemo command work on IRIX Quake III?

I have no idea what these machines cost back in the day, but I'm sure they weren't cheap! (I've never seen one represented in one of SGI's price-lists.)
I will film this machine in action the next time I'm in Cape Town, I'll check the timedemo command then.
I want to make a proper video covering this machine, so I'm not going to rush it.

I don't have a price list for whole Onyx2 systems, but I know list price for some parts of my Onyx2, which has the whole DMedia HD setup.
It doesn't add up to a million bucks, but likely a couple of hundred thousand.
IR4 boardset: ~ 150 grand with dual RM11's:
Code:
$20,000 030-1398-002 PCA GE16-4 FR
$55,000 013-3126-005 BOARDSET ASSY RM11
$20,362 013-2688-003 PCA SET DG5-2 & HD TVO FR
DMedia DM2, VBOB w./ DM5 + LVDS cables:
Code:
$10,500 013-3284-002 ASSY XT-SNOWBALL FR
$19,084 013-2746-003 VBOB SYSTEM ASSY W/SNOWBALL
$116 018-0946-001 CABLE ASSY LVDS 26P M 5M FE
The 500MHz R14K nodes became available as an upgrade after shipment of new Onyx2 systems halted. Upgrading a nodeboard (returning your original node) cost $13,543 per nodeboard. A dual 400 nodeboard was $16,000 list price.

Thanks very much for the input Jan-Jaap! (Much appreciated!)
Do you have any idea what the DG5-8 cost as my system is fitted with one?

Do you have any idea what the DG5-8 cost as my system is fitted with one?
Code:
$13,187 030-1055-001 PCA DG5-2
$10,200 013-3005-002 PCA DG5B-8 & VIO5H
The price for the DG5-8 is an exchange price, presumably you have to return the $10K DG5-2...
Of course this doesn't mean the real world price for a DG5-8 was $23K. Nobody paid list price, and certainly not to return the part to get an upgrade to 8 channels.
NB these prices are from late 2006.
Oh, it seems I do have a price for an Onyx2. Prices in EUR, late 2001.
Code:
Onyx2 InfiniteReality3 Graphics Systems
---------------------------------------
D1-H7602-8-IR3 Base InfiniteReality3 DS € 161.538
2x R12K CPU, 300 MHz
8 MB Cache
D1-H7802-8-IR3 Base InfiniteReality3 DS € 192.307
2x R12K CPU, 400 MHz
8 MB Cache
That's one nodeboard, one RM10, and zero RAM. You do get a 9GB system disk
To dress up your system, add some of these:
Code:
Upgrades
-----------------
HU1-H7602-8 Node Board 2x 300 MHz € 46.154
HU1-H7802-8 Node Board 2x 400 MHz € 61.538
HU-VRM-64 add. 64 MB Texture Memory € 66.483
HU-VRM-256 add. 256 MB Texture Memory € 66.483
OPN-256-1 256 MB RAM € 2.588
OPN-512-D1 512 MB RAM € 5.176
OPN-1GB-D2 1 GB RAM € 10.353
OPN-2GB-D4 2 GB RAM € 20.705
FTO-18GB 18.2 GB Disk USCSI Upgr. € 506
FTO-M21S-UPM24G 24" SuperWide Monitor Upgr. € 3.159
D-M21S-OPT add.21" Monitor € 4.533
D-M24S-OPT add. 24" Monitor € 4.231
HU-DD02-SA High Resolution Display € 27.198
P-S-CD40x-S-IPC CD-ROM-LW 40x € 454
P-S-DDS-IPC 12 GB 4mm DAT-DDS3 Tape € 3.159
P-S-DLT7-STKR DLT 7000 Stacker € 19.334
So basically with a second RM and node board, and 8GB RAM you can add another € 200.000 to the base system price.
Most expensive system:
Code:
R4-MONSTER-GP RealityMonster Base IR3 € 1.484.610
16x R12K CPU, 400 MHz
8 MB Cache
3x IR3 Pipe, 4 Rack
Of course you want that one with dual RM's for all thee pipes ( + € 199,449) and 32GB RAM ( + € 331,280)
