Was your sgi ever previously used for anything interesting? - darkhelmet02 - 07-29-2020

My Octane was used for an MRI machine at a hospital and it still had the software for it!
My indy controlled an ultrapoint laser imaging system that was used to scan for defects in silicon wafers.
My Indigo2 R8000 acted as a DNS server for a courthouse (Weird use for an R8000)
And my indigo2 impact was used as a daily driver up until 2006, according to the guy I bought it from. Not sure how he got it.

I have an ex-Goddard Challenge S.

My Indy was used/owned by Boeing (bought it from them off a pallet, no HDD) and my first Indigo2 in 1999 (High-Impact R4400) was owned by BF Goodrich (No HDDs when I got it..but I registered it with SGI back then and was given it's previous ownership history!) and I'm told my Teal Indigo2 was used by FOX animation studios for audio processing for the Simpsons TV series. It still has a FOX Studios Asset label on it...but I got it second-hand so that's the story the guy I bought it from told me. My newest Tezro (Quad 700Mhz) was used for video post-processing (as it has a huge amount of Video options on it)..but again I bought it second-hand.

I've never bought an SGI with a drive intact from the original owner, :-(

Nice! I imagine you didn't get a hard drive with thatWink

My O2 was used for NMR spectroscopy in an university. The software (XWINNMR) is still running.
I also have the original CD and flexlm license file and could install it on the MAME emulated Indy.
I just had to modify the MAC address to match the license file.
The attached picture is a screenshot of the emulated Indy

thats a pretty full history on your machines! Its too bad you never got the drives with those, but i understand why those companies wouldn't want their information being given away.

My Octane2 was originally owned by University of Wisconsin-Madison; I did get it with the hard drive, which still has the IRIX installation that was set up by them. I have yet to image it or attempt to clear the passwords to see if there's anything of interest on the installation, but I plan on at least imaging it rather soon. For now I just took the drive out. My first SGI, an Indy R5000, was a Cyclone Indy with an Ikon Office Solutions asset tag on it, but that's all I really know about that one.

My Octane2 was a Flame machine for a designer working in Hollywood.

Notable films he's credited with include Vanilla Sky, Bad Boys II, What Lies Beneath, Memoirs of a Geisha and the Star Trek films Into Darkness & Beyond.

I've been meaning to get it going with Flame again, I'm pretty sure I have licenses for things since it had arrived with some hard disks installed. I think I need a FC array though..

Thats awesome! Did it have a disk with it when you acquired it or are you going to have to find a copy of flame on your own?

It came installed on the original hard disks in the machine, but because the framestore wasn’t connected to the FC adapter I never got very far.

I did locate some ‘interesting’ software in my SGI immersion experiment, and will attempt to merge all the license data I have for my Octane and try to get Flame up and running on a new hard disk I grabbed off eBay.
