How do I increase the memory available to the mental ray renderer in Maya 6.5 - Irinikus - 07-24-2020

When attempting to render large scenes using Maya 6.5 on my Tezro, Ive encountered this error:

I would really like to know if there's a workaround for this? (Is there a config file somewhere that can be modified, allowing the renderer to access more of the system's memory?)

You can add more swap space, it will render a bit slower than in memory...

Swap partition, used by IRIX for temporary storage when there is less physical memory than all of its processes need.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it, but the software is hitting the limits of it's own memory buffer, which is considerably smaller than the systems RAM!

Is there a way to increase the size of the swap partition on my disk without having to reinstall, as there's no ways I'm reinstalling! (It took ages to set this system up!)

Just as a matter of interest, take a look at my system memory usage in the system performance, when the error occurred.

You should be able to do it from the Command Monitor or a shell, does not require a reinstall.. It has been ages since I did it on my Octane back in the day, so can't remember all the commands.

Good thing is that someone did a write up of it here:

Also if memory serves me correctly, there are tweaks that you can make within Maya for rending to help optimize both memory usage and rendering time... My machine is down right now, so can't check it. It should be back up and ready to render tomorrow.

Thanks for the link, I have added the additional swap file "/usr/swap" for now!

I tried to render a very large scene and it threw this error:

So the problem still remains.

Have you tried to render from the command line and not within Maya?

I haven't as yet.

I'm going to be giving my SGI's a break for the next few days to catch up on some gaming. "Metro Exodus" So I will report back once I have.

Well I finally got my system almost all back up, you can always drop your .mb file somewhere and I can see if I can render without errors on my end... I see in your screen shot that you have Corel Draw, would love a copy, if you get a chance, could you point me to it please?

Enjoy the game, I'll be cleaning up the yard due to the monsoon finally coming in.
