The SGI Infinity Cube Rendered in Maya 6.5 -
Irinikus - 07-18-2020
Today I made a start, on what might end up being, my own interpretation of "Bump Logo".
Here's the start I've made:

Here's the next instalment:

wow that looks nice! Reminds me of the classic 90ies CGI

Thanks Man!
I really like the fact that the output from the likes of May 6.5, running on these machines look so "retro" by today's standard!
Let's see how far I can take this before the Tezro runs out of memory! (There is a significant amount of detail in each one for the pillars, especially the "feathers" towards the top (a huge vertex count!!!).) As a result, the Tezro's already starting to feel a bit sluggish at this level of detail!
To keep the vertex count to a minimum, I've used NURBS as much as possible in this scene so far.
By the way, the construction of "infinity Cube" itself, was a little bit more on the tricky side than I thought it would be! (Constructing it as a single polygon anyway!)

This is as far as I could push it!!! (I really battled to get this to render!!!)
I might be able to add one or two small things to this scene still, but the Tezro's really operating at it's limit here!

I've at least managed to complete the dome and it's currently rendering:
This is the current render with the completed dome.
I've just moved the camera backwards slightly to make it more comfortable to look at from a perspective point of view, and its currently rendering with that adjustment.

I'm not sure what's more impressive, the render or the setup!
Great job, I can't imagine how to begin doing this. Actually my brother used to do POVray stuff when we were kids and he'd choke the 486 for days rendering endless coloured balls. When I see stuff like this or watch those old movies from SGI about Toy Story or whatever it never ceases to amaze me. The patience and passion required for this sort of endeavour is really something worthy of note.
I'd say the closest I got for patience on such a 'render' was waiting for a JPEG to load over a 14,4 modem :-)

Here's the rendering with the better perspective:

Here's the final rendering, complete with the Wisp:

Watching a scene such as this render is kind of like watching paint dry, but it's worth it!
The challenge here, is that it takes more than 40 minutes to render, so the process of setting the scene up properly, especially the lighting takes for ever, as you have to render the scene over and over again, to make the necessary adjustments!
