Does IRIXNetwork needs a Mirror? - defaultrouteuk - 07-05-2020

Hi IRIXNetwork,

I just registered but I've been shy to engage for a while. I was an IRIX admin 1997-2000 but it was mostly Indys and Indigo2s. There was a sweet Challenge DM desk side unit and these crazy disk vault things. Good times, good times. I got a pimped O2 from Ian Mapleson last year and I was going to host it but I can't do much with it here in the UAE! Next time I get home...maybe.

Anyway, to the meat, I run a small ISP and we have some bandwidth, rack space and compute/storage in UK and DE. I was kinda wondering if the site admin wanted a mirror? I don't want anything for it, it could be my 'subscription fee' or something. We've been pushing packets since 2011 and I don't see anything changing so if there is an appetite then whoever can shoot me a DM.

All the best
Rich

Thanks for the offer. I'm definitely looking to expand our infrastructure and improve redundancy so I'm happy to talk more about this with you at any time.

Our primary infrastructure uses FreeBSD 12 on a number of VPS servers in the US. PHP, NGINX, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, etc are the things we rely on.

I have some reservations about operating forum content from within European Union but since I think the UK is more or less outside of that scope I am willing to consider it as long as there's not any gotchas in UK law that would make it easier for the site to be taken down for other reasons. I'll have to do research.

GDPR in particular is not honored on the website simply because I don't think that it's practical and because the United States does not require me to. It's really difficult to do that and still maintain logging as well as things like IP bans and such.

As long as I can maintain my current back up routines and we can expand our operations either in terms of file storage or other things.

Hi Raion,.

I'm OK with whatever or however you want to engage mate. I can spin up a FreeBSD VPS on our kit (PROXMOX) and you can install whatever you like. I don't interfere unless someone is doing bad things to/from your host.. We've got kit in four sites, some are smaller than others but they are all connected - we're a network business more than a compute one. But, if you let me know the compute and storage requirements I can do something. It won't be AWS pretty but it'll work Smile Imagine a shell host in the early 2000's, yeah, that's us. Bare bones. No Frills.

GDPR is a massive pain in the ares. The UK would operate under that policy unfortunately so it might still be a ball ache. Not sure really but we have a bunch of other clients who seem to be OK. Just smash a disclaimer on the site and Bob's your Auntie.

At a push (not sure what volumes of traffic of data you have) we could do something tasty in AWS though because we have the direct fiber connect into their cloud...I don' know what to say. Sounds like I'm advertising and I don't want to get booted out. Actually, funny story, I saw my thread had gone and thought it was moderated due to the possibility I was 'up to no good'. Was happy to see it was just moved.

Long story short - reach out to me when you like - I hope you can see my details or if not drop me a PM and I'll be in touch directly. Like I said, don't expect Elon Musks crack automation team to deal with this. But all the same my heart will be in it.
