I have always wondered what the reasoning was behind crippling the desktop Tezro :-(  It's even got the damned slot for a second V12, I can't believe the snowball takes less juice, so that excuse sounds like balderdash, the rackmount can run dual head, what's the deal with the deskside ?

Also have wondered for a while if there could be a hack to disable their "no dualhead allowed" check ... is that a prom thing or an irix thing ? Want to get out the screwdriver, irinikus ?

It's not a power consumption thing, it's heat. It already runs at it's max thermals with a 1GHz and V12, so it didn't need anything else.

I agree that the thermals are the problem here, as my machine does tend to adjust the fan speed on the Odyssey side to near max during the summer months!

The CPU side shouldn't feature here, as the CPU's and Odyssey are thermally separated. (In isolated compartments within the machine, each with their own airflow.)

If you could liquid cool the Odyssey's, you might be able to do it. (That would be a big project though and would require considerable modification to the rear panel of the machine, which would have to be done professionally.)

That wasn't the excuse from SGI tho, and the Tezro came all the way down to a single 600 ? mhz cpu, yet the second slot that could have run a V12 was always disabled for dual head.  And as Irinikus points out, the processors and the graphics are on oposite sides of the case, in separate compartments. And dual V12's or MXE's (which run hotter ? rambus is quite hot) are perfectly well accomodated in an Octane (which is a much better designed machine, but still ...) And how much more heat/current does a V10/12 use than a dm3-5-6-7 ? Those are all pretty old-style cards, they are not going to be sucking 2 watts and burning off 6 calories/hour.

It should be doable .... which kinda reminds me of that project to figure out how to upgrade a V10 to a V12. That should be doable too Smile

The heatsink design on the Octane version of the V12 is better than that used the Fuel/Tezro, as it features heat pipes! Unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to fit the Octane heatsink to the Tezro model, as the air flows across the card in the Octane and along the card in the Tezro!

The heatsink found on the Tezro type is shitty extruded aluminium, not vey thermally efficient!

By replacing the shitty extruded aluminium with solid copper, you may be able to get the thermals in check, as there is sufficient airflow through the machine in my opinion!

Agreed, that heat sink sucks. Even the aluminum ones that are slotted, like on the cpu's, work better. The ones that are slotted and staggered so the air has to follow a more circuitous path work even better.  You'd think you'd get at least decent components when you pay $50,000 for a slow computer. Inventor's Dilemna my ass, they sold cheap crap for high prices and wondered why the company went under. Well, duh.
