Dual Head configuration on octane - soviet - 04-18-2020

Hi guys,

After a long long time i was able to get my damned octane to work fine.
I have a default irix 6.5.30 installed using booterizer.
Now i have two video boards:
On quadrant A-B theres an MXI board.
On quadrant C i have an SI board.
The MXI card is the default output and display ok
The SI board is connected to a monitor but there's no video on it at the moment.

This is a capture from HINV:

I like to know if possible to use this two boards in "dual head" configuration ?.
And if this is possible how i can configure the SI board as a second display ?.
Searched on the net and found a bunch of articles talking about it but not sure what is the correct one.

Thanks !

Hmm... That's weird. The SI should just work. The only config option I've had to mess with is xinerama (a chkconfig option), which allows you to drag windows from one screen to the other.

So there is no video output at all from the SI? Have you checked the SI individually to verify it works?

You where right the viewsonic 19" monitor i was using for the secondary display don't worked, but replaced it for a sony monitor and bang Biggrin dual display.
Never imagined that it was so easy.
Now i see theres no way to move windows between displays this can be enabled in some way ?

chkconfig xinerama on, followed by a log-off/log-in should do the trick.

And one PS--you cannot move OpenGL windows from one head to the other (well, you can, but it won't show any of the contents).

RE: Dual Head configuration on octane - soviet - 04-19-2020

when i do "chkconfig xinerama on" got this error:

OCTANE 1# chkconfig xinerama on
chkconfig: cannot set flag "xinerama": No such file or directory
use "chkconfig -f xinerama on" to create and set the flag

In that case, just do chkconfig -f xinerama on and re log in.

What a dumb question the damn error message was telling me in my face what i have to do.

Now i have xinerama working, i have another question about this thing.

Before enabling xinerama i can run opengl software in the primary and secondary monitors.
Now only can be done in the primary display.

Is possible to enable opengl en both monitors having xinerama running ?.

I'm not aware of a way to get OpenGL on the secondary monitor, but my knowledge of SGI xinerama is far from complete.

As far as I know, OpenGL and Xinerama are mutually exclusive.  You can have one or the other but not both.

SGI also had its OpenGL MultiPipe software that would allow you to use OpenGL on multiple monitors while maintaining the ability to drag windows between them (like with Xinerama).  But as far as I know it was only supported on later/larger hardware such as the Onyx machines and VPro-equipped systems.  But I'm no expert on it, so you might want to look into OpenGL MultiPipe anyway.

I ran dual head using mxe plus si/se gfx and worked good. As mentioned above, mxe will be your main accelerated display and the second display will not use open gl. The monitors work as 2 separate terminals meaning they behave separately and not as one desktop. The tool chest will appear on both screens, but icons like the software finder will not open. Files and folders are fully usable and applications that don’t use open gl acceleration will work. For example, I would open Softimage 3d or power animator on the main screen and open Matador paint on the second monitor.
