CinePaint on IRIX - TommyBoy - 03-23-2020

CinePaint's website and wikipedia article shows that they did have a version for IRIX. Does anybody know where you can download that? It's open-source so it would be a big hit on IRIX network. I'm sure it would be useful for anybody doing anything with videos on an SGI.

For those of you who don't know, CinePaint was a program like photoshop but for the frames of videos. It made things easier for getting exactly the look that you wanted in a movie. It was used heavily in films such as the Harry Potter movies, the Tobey Maguire Spider Man movies, Stuart Little 1 & 2, the Spy Kids movies, Elf, Planet of the Apes remake, and many other big hits of the early 2000s.

Here are the links to CinePaint's website, wikipedia article, and sourceforge repository:

RE: CinePaint on IRIX - Raion - 03-23-2020

Cinepaint was packaged at one point. I will probably explore repackaging it soon, but it's GTK2, which means GCC for compilation in all likelihood. The implication there is that rules out most of the very slow SGIs, and will probably require a pretty fast SGI to be acceptable and usable. The same issue plagues GIMP, which is still on GTK2.

A lot of the other apps of this type suffer a similar dilemma.

Of course, I will try once we reach that sort of point with the new nekoware, but it's going to take time, and we can't make guarantees. We're already not repackaging firefox unless Diegel or someone else elects to do that.

I take it that this means it won't run on an Indy or anything like that?

Affirmative. I could definitely, if packaging it is feasible, do it, but it may not be very usable.

Hey... This is in response to the news about Cinepaint on the GIMP forum. I know we established that Cinepaint 2 was coming soon, but for now could someone please package the original Cinepaint? I kinda wanted to play around with it.

RE: CinePaint on IRIX - Raion - 01-12-2021

I looked into it, but I'd need to bump several versions of nekoware packages to do it from the looks of it, plus there's some missing nekoware packages that I found via mplayer.

I need to talk to axatax about including it in NW2. Hang tight.
