SGI o2: Kernel Panic at ARCS video init with analog video module connencted - MrArgent - 02-29-2020

So, I dropped more money on a actual Analog A/V option. Only thing is, when I connect it to my o2 the machine instantly PANICs. Values remain constant in spite of reboots, connector cleanings, dustings, and the like. I've spent more on these damned modules than I have the computer itself at this point.

The board's a Rev. F. Reverting to my two Rev. D audio boards causes the machine (R10k) to boot just fine. Is this some weird compatibility thing? Also, could I move the three video-specific chips over to one of my two known good audio only boards to "promote" it? They both use the same exact base PCB and components aside from the three.

The O2 does have a PROM update that only gets installed with the later versions of IRIX. If you're using 6.3 or early 6.5, you're not getting that update.

Raion has a valid point. What is the PROM revision of the O2 and what IRIX version are you running?

Also some IRIX patches can cause panics like these. Do you have any extra patches applied after IRIX was installed?

This machine was promoted to 6.5.30 at one point, but I rolled it back to 6.5.22 to preserve photoshop text rendering functionality.

In my opinion i think it is time to reseat components on the O2 to make sure everything has good contact. Memory, backplane, PCI riser...
Clean the connectors with canned air and swab them with an alcohol solution and q-tip.

Don't forget to make sure to disconnect the power chord before you take anything out of the machine.
