Anyone got a BeBox? - Raion - 02-29-2020

Never seen one in real life, though I'm kicking myself for not getting one a decade ago. Had one offered to me for 300 bucks in 2007.

I have actually seen one in person that a friend owned but it needed part/repairs so it wasn’t bootable. So not too exciting. I’ve always wondered what the firmware was like on those and if they could run Linux or AIX or possibly Windows NT

yes, I've got one. I don't feel like parting with it though...
So far, I have not been successful at reinstalling the machine. It booted a few years ago, but the disk was dangerously noisy and I always do a clean install if possible. Then I noticed that someone fitted a Matrox Millennium graphics card, which isn't supported by the basic box, so you get no output when you start up the machine. Turns out that hardware support is difficult. Two weeks ago I finally got a proper card, an old S3 with an 864 chip. I hope that I can reinstall this machine in the near future.
If anyone has links to proper documentation, I would be grateful.

I can't imagine why you'd want to. It's like running *nix on an Amiga - sure, you can do it, but what do you get out of it? It's not going to be a better *nix workstation than the pile of other, faster *nix workstations out there, even if you limit that comparison to the '90s RISC boxen, and *nix isn't going to make any particularly special use of the hardware.

Anyway, never owned one myself, but it'd be fun. I did try playing around with the x86 BeOS releases some years ago, but I could never get it to work with the hardware I had to hand...

I’m not saying you should. I’m just curious from a technical standpoint. My stance has pretty much always been that an officially supported OS is almost always best for retro machines.

I think you can run Linux or NetBSD, but both will only support one CPU. I guess that's due to the cacheless SMP architecture of the BeBox.

My stash...there's also an Amiga 1500 somewhere.

Thanks!  Sadly I'm selling them all, I don't have the time or space for them :-(

How much for one of them? Gimme a price, and I'll tell you how long it'll take me to earn it.
