Sad Times at SGI High - KayBee - 02-16-2020

Hi Again Irixers, I have an O2 that is in very bad condition. Instead of an explanation, a picture is worth a thousand words.     
   
   
My plan is to rebuild it, unfortunately without the help of Oscar Goldman, or his six million dollars. I didn't take off the plastics to inspect it, there are no plastics, or CD-ROM, or lever to secure the System Module (which is cracked badly), it has memory errors (in slot 3) other than that it is in great shape! Yikes, how would a machine get thrashed like this? I figure it witnessed a murder and was thrown from a moving train. Anyway, I will look for a system module tray first I guess, because it does power up (smells like ozone, hard drive squeals), and I can login, but it makes me nervous that only a card edge connector and nothing mechanical is holding it together.

The quest for parts begins...

I have a number of spare parts from upgrading my O2 from an R5000 to an R10000 machine. This includes an extra chassis, mostly-complete skins, a PCI riser, and a motherboard tray. Pictures are here: http://siliconimage.irixnet.org/User-Albums/Kaigan/O2-Parts

Depending on where you're located, I might be able to get some pieces sent your way. It's likely that the skins would be further damaged by any transport, though. The motherboard tray should be fine if packed well, as it looks to be made of a different plastic.

I still have a working O2 CD drive after I upgraded my O2 to DVD. Let me know if you're interested in it and I'll make you an offer. The leftover bracket from the DVD, which I've since screwed onto the CD drive, appears to be designed for these newer O2 revisions. I noticed there's no visible SCSI terminator and the power wires are slimmer, which the opposite is true for the original 1996 O2 models. Also to note is that it won't come with the front tray plastic, so if you're trying to get it complete with brittle plastics and all you can order one from Ian or Mashek or anyone else here who might have one to spare.

Thank you Jacknet, I am going to use the SCSI2SD instead of an optical drive, but thank you for the offer. I will contact Mashek about the plastics, Thanks. Funny there isn't an SGI system seller here near Los Angeles, SGI systems were everywhere here when I moved here in 1998.

Perhaps you could get creative with the case and create the covers out of paper mache or maybe use clay ;D
