Rendering the Solar System and the Voyager Probe in Maya 6.5 on an SGI Tezro -
Irinikus - 02-02-2020
I've made a start on rendering the planets in the Solar System, with the correct relative sizes.
This model is a combination of multi-layered 2D and 3D rendering:
I still have quite a way to go with this one, but this is my start. (For a start, the background stars, which were visible on the Tezro are not visible in these images, hence I will have to play around with their self illumination a bit!)
I also have to fine tune Saturn's rings, as the planet isn't casting a shadow across them. It did before I used a map for self illumination on them. (They were too dark) I will have to play around here to get things right!

That's really nice!
I wished I could have your skills :(

The easiest way to start is to completely visualise something that interests you, break it up into a series of primitives in your mind's eye and then construct it.
With a bit of practice, I’m sure you’d be able to produce a good model. As with everything in live, it’s like learning to ride a bicycle.
You just need to teach yourself to break objects up in a way I which allows you to use the standard set of primitives, which are then modified and pieced together to reproduce them.
Here's my latest rendering: (The Milky Way backdrop is now visible and Saturn's now casting a shadow across it's rings)
Next I'm going to model the Voyager 2 Satellite and place it in the scene. (This will take some time to do)

I've made a start on the Voyager II probe: This has taken me the whole day to do! So it's going to take a hell of allot of work and time to complete!
The thing that really complicates things here, is that I have to build this 3D model up from the information that I've gathered from allot of pictures of the probe, as no one picture gives you all of the required information regarding it's construction!

The dish is now pretty much complete: (This is the easy part!)

oh yeah.

This is looking very cool. Keep going.

Thanks very much for the link! This will indeed be a great help!
It will definitely help with the construction of the various trusses and mounting points, however there are still subtle differences between this model and what is seen in pictures of the actual probe during it's construction. The mounting points and truss assemblies are accurately represented, so it will be a great help!

I plan on building it up, module by module over the next few weeks!

Work has really got in the way during the last week or so (Even today I was in the air for three hours or so! I would have preferred to sit back, enjoy a beer and work on my model!), so I will get back to this scene once things calm down a bit.

Wow that's just beautiful - and I like how these SGIs are put to good work in 2020 and beyond.
