VCF 2020 -
Raion - 01-07-2020
IRIX Network will be having a presence as a VCF exhibit again this year. We plan to have a much bigger and more functional exhibit now that we've learned lessons from last time.
One question!
Does anyone live in VA, MD or NC who wants to go and is willing to help out with transit? I drive an Impreza and it's just not big enough to haul any of the bigger systems. If someone wants to come along with their vehicle, I may be willing to pay for your hotel room and fuel for the event duration. We will need to fold the seats and fit at least a handful of bigger systems. If you're in the market, let me know.
April 24-26
Alternatively I'll need to rent a van, and that gets expensive.

Three tables have been reserved, and there's a confirmed exhibit including at least two desksides, maybe three.

So, some of the stuff we plan to have at VCF 2020 as of now:
At least 1 CADDUO Octane using dual SE graphics boards and hooked up to two monitors
Two Origin 2000s craylinked and possibly having video output using a modified SI + CADDUO
A top-spec Octane2
1 Challenge S system
Possibly an Origin 350 (POSSIBLY)
We'll be showing off GemRB on at least one system, as well as nekoware/freeware, and discussing with people multiple configs. If it's not busy, I also plan to teach people who come by about MIPSPro and tardists.

I'm planning on bringing a few systems of my own, including my Indy and O2, which will be focused on some of the A/V capabilities of the machines:
Since the Nintendo 64 outputs a "non-standard", but very common 240p video signal, I'm using a Sony DVD recorder with progressive scan output to convert the signal to 480p for use by the O2. That same signal is being piped out to the Indy as well. From the composite video output on the O2, the signal is sent to the larger of the two Broadcast Video Monitors (BVMs). While the O2 can happily send the signal straight out, I'm actually capturing the portion of the screen with the Zelda gameplay, along with the "Live Video Output" message just to show that it is going through the O2. From the larger BVM, I'm taking its RGB decoder output and feeding it directly to the RGB input of the smaller BVM.
I also have an IndyCam and an O2Cam that I'll have set up for people to play with, so that they can see themselves on both the LCD displays and on a BVM. Unfortunately, the 20" BVM is
heavy (and a little bit broken), so it won't be coming with me. The O2 "Oh, my" ad featuring Mario will be there, though!

My high-end specced Octane will also be making an appearance.
Also pictured but not featured in this picture are my skinless Tezro, Sun Ultra 45, and a couple of other game consoles including an XBox, Dreamcast, and Saturn.

Some of the possible exhibits I have in mind:
1. An origin 2k deskside craylinked and having an SI card installed to allow graphics, so it's an "Onyx 2000"
2. An Octane2 with both mplayer playing some classic 90s anime and cinepaint or other programs running (I have plans to rebuild mplayer and cinepaint, but if not, the historical nekoware releases do work.
3. Another Octane2 with Baldur's Gate
4. An Origin 350 showing off nekoware, and other software that IRIX has ports of.
And I have plans to actually write custom exhibit webpages for most of these units with the objective of showing off the multitasking capabilities.
Some of these are tentative. Trying to either fix my old SUV that can carry the Origin, or I'll need to rent a van to carry these units. Lady Serena Kitty offered to drive me, and that's also an option, but I don't want to inconvenience a lady for obvious reasons.

VCF PNW was canceled due to SARS-COVID-19.
No word yet on VCF East, but we'll be keeping people updated.

Damn, that's a bummer.

VCF East has been postponed until October 10-12, 2020. While I haven't spoken to the other IRIX Network exhibitors yet, I'm still intending to go to the event and I imagine that they will attend if at all possible as well.

I have no issue going.

They finally released an official announcement. I will be working with the others to ensure that we have a "no excuses" good exhibit planned. With the delay passing through October, I should be well under way with my new work, so there's no reason to not have this work out in our favor. Life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
