SGI Freeware???? - Irinikus - 01-05-2020

I've gone ahead and attempted to install 11 SGI freeware CD's onto my tezro.

Many of the programs were not installed, as they required prerequisites that simply were not there.

My question is this: Is there a baseline Freeware installation that is then updated with the disks that were sent out ever so often.

If so, where can I get a copy of this baseline Freeware installation?

The freeware CD's are not overlays so you can just pick the latest version and install that. There is a chance that some newer version of a library package won't work with a program in freeware, but if you have older freeware versions, you can always downgrade to a previous version.

Since I've installed Freeware on this machine, the following comes up, just before the login screen:

Is this normal? And if not, how do I resolve it?

The system appears to be running perfectly otherwise.

So, the messages are as follows:

1. NTPD - you can chkconfig that off I'm sure.
2. httpd and esp should be turned off, they're serious security risks.

lpstat is used by CUPS and lpd, so you may have installed CUPS and enabled it.

I uninstalled nntpcache-2.3.3 and this is now what I see, so that worked:

Which one of the checked programs is the offending one?

it's not nntp - that's usenet. It's the NTP time protocol

Thanks! I'm uninstalling ntp now, lets see what happens!

You don't have to uninstall it. You could have easily just disabled the service using chkconfig.

Sorry man, I uninstalled it and this is what I got, so there's still some shite going on here!

Is it not maybe ntop  (network analysis tool)?

RE: SGI Freeware???? - Raion - 01-05-2020

you've got cups installed, that may be the cause of the lpstat error.

As for the other messages, run this from a terminal as root:

# chkconfig webface_apache off
# chkconfig esp off
# chkconfig httpd off
# rm -rf /usr/include/Vk.0

That should get rid of the majority of the messages. I'm not familiar with config.tcl though.
