Boot octane after fresh irix instal and now this - bjames - 12-05-2019

Anyone know what this means?  I just finished installing irix 6.5.12m on a clean disk and when I reboot the crane.  This comes up.

It looks like either:

your disk is dying
the kernel didn't get built properly
You didn't actually format the disk, just repartitioned it and as a result corrupted the new install

In any case, I recommend network installing using 6.5.30 on the file server (click "files" at the top right using the dark theme, then "Local Mirror") and download the tarballs and network install.

Make sure during fx you run exercise to zero out the disk.

XFS filesystem corruption. Been there myself. Could be:

1. You did a miniroot install over an existing installation and it didn't create a new filesystem. You inherited the corruption of the previous install. This is surprisingly common.

2. The disk is dying.

The solution is simple: boot into fx -x, select exercise > sequential > write-only and overwrite the entire disk. If the disk starts to reassign bad sectors, toss it, it's not worth it. Once wiped, the IRIX miniroot will always create a new fs and you've covered #1.

Wiping disks of the size typically found in an SGI takes maybe 10 minutes, a botched IRIX install will cost you a frustrating evening. Disks and power supplies are the most likely parts to fail. I always exercise disks before an install.

Raion, you were right about the partitioning. I decided to step through the entire process again ( installing irix from a clean disk) and realized during the disk preparation, I realized I forgot to partion the drive after cleaning and making the file system. I reinstalled everything and all works... including the V12 gfx.

Thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction.

Hi Ian-Jaap, during the FX process I ran the disk excersize to look for bad blocks. No errors were logged, so it appears nothing is wrong with the drive, the issue was with the user. lOL
