What Patches do I need? - weblacky - 11-27-2019

Hi All,
This is a question I've had for a long time, now that SGI.com online archives are gone, and I'm looking to reload some systems, what patches do I need or use? Are they like Windows updates where they are smart enough to know if they apply to your system or not and you just try to install all the patches you can?

Looking at archive: http://usftp.irixnet.org/sgi-irix/patches/

It's all very cryptic, I know the two patches for Tezro L1 and PROM firmware for 4x1Ghz because of the posts here...but what about all the other patches?

I have older systems on 6.5.22m and I have the media for 6.5.30f and will likely bring all newer systems that can install it up to date (from 6.5.19f).

The site README claims some kernel roll-ups are trash, but doesn't give the patches to avoid, so I just need either a tailored list of patches to install or a list of "bad patches" to avoid.

Thanks!

Sadly I don't have a verbose list of what each patch does..I usually just download them all, unpack them and load them into inst> and see what they do.

Exactly what systems are you trying to upgrade, and from what version of IRIX are they currently and to what version of IRIX do you wish to upgrade them to?

I don't have precise specs as my collection is large and software is either not installed or old installs. I haven't seriously been able to work on it since about 2010. I just got more systems on a deal (nearly completing my collection!), so that's why I'm trying to restart and finalize things.

Everything that I touched back then has 6.5.19f (because I have the real disks, from back in the day). I got a great deal in 2013 on a full set of 6.5.30f disks, but never really got around to loading it on anything. I used to have a free SGI Support Portfolio account and did download 6.5.22m legally back in the late 90's. So one or two systems MIGHT be running that...but I need to reset pretty much everything.

But that's what needs to get installed on all supported systems (why I'm asking about all this). Later (~2016) all the Irix disks people use now got uploaded to the web and so I'd prefer to load 6.5.22m on all the old systems and load 6.5.30f on all newer systems (update everything really).

Also I plan to go through each system and clean, rebuild any hardware, open most power supplies and clean and rebuild them as well (check basic caps, resistors, leaky diodes, ESR, etc..), then reload to new SCSI disks (less noise), if applicable. Then install all optional cards (NICs, capture cards, Fibre channel, graphics, etc...) and accessories I've accumulated for each system, then optional software (SoftWindows, etc).

I'm likely going to investigate using some form of install scripting to get consistent installs.

What I have (from memory):

1 x Indy R5000 (I think, 150Mhz) - 6.5.22m
2 x Indigo2 MIPS3 (R4400 - 250Mhz HIGH IMPACT with TRAM, other one is teal with FDDI card and speed unknown) - 6.5.19f on both
1 x Indigo2 MIPS4 R10000 (195Mhz Solid IMPACT with Video4Impact board) - blank
2 x O2 R5200 (200Mhz & 300Mhz, one has the 1600SW display adapter)- blank & 6.5.19f
3 x Octane Dual R12000 (300Mhz with V10 Graphics) - blank & newest purchases
1 x Tezro Dual R16000 CPU (800Mhz) - 6.5.19f
1 x Indigo R3000 (untested, needs work). - unknown

The duplicate Octanes will likely go up for sale after rebuild, (I'll post here first!) as they came from a video production house so are pretty stacked and have SDI Video capture cards and Odyssey graphics.

But I need to get them turn key and rebuilt before I can offer them. I'm going back through over 20 years of SGI collecting (started in 1998 with that Purple High Impact R4400 - from BF Goodrich :-) and I know more about PSU/PCB repair and System administration then I did back then. I'd like to get it all finalized and reset, cleaned, stored or displayed, and document what I can and keep moving.

In the end I'm still on the lookout for an Octane2 (Dual), a Fuel 700Mhz or better, and if the heavens decide to shine on me and O2+. I'm not interested in SGIs OLDER than INDIGOs, so at that point...the collection will be complete and I'll move on to something like Next Computers or the like. If I got more SGIs that could be fixed, I'd do it...but I doubt I'd want like an Onyx or something that big. Workstations are the ones I like best.

Anyway...patches...more info :-)

According to this, the crucial patch for Octanes is 5086:

I'm pretty sure that from 6.5.22 onwards that patch is unnecessary because it's merged into the installation media for the later versions.

Most, if not all of the patches are described here:
