DOS 6.2 on irix - bjames - 11-13-2019

Hi all,

I have Softwindows 95 running fine on my Octane and was wondering about installing DOS applications. I don’t think windows 95 includes DOS, but can be installed separately. My question is has anyone installed DOS on IRIX or within Softwindows?

I would like to install my old licenses of 3d studio r4 and AutoCAD r12 for dos.

SoftWindows 2 essentially installs over a properly emulated version of DOS and allows DOS programs to run very well under IRIX.

For this reason, I have both SoftWindows 2 and 95 installed on my Tezro.

100%, SoftWindows 2 is really nice.

Windows 95 does include DOS, specifically DOS 7.0 sits under the hood (it was never sold separately). It should be possible from Windows 95 to exit to DOS mode, it'll be in the Shutdown menu.

I've noticed that the DOS under 95 operates a little sluggish with some apps when compared to the environment in SW2

The DOS That comes with Soft Windows 2 is more efficient:

This video will give you some idea as to how well it runs:

Interesting, I may have to look into this more. A wile ago I installed and old License of 3D Studio R4 (Dos) and would not run in Dos mode. By the looks of the scrambled interface, It appeared it may have to do with DOS display drivers. Also, I tried installing Heretic (dos) and it would not even open. This is when I started thinking DOS apps may not be compatible with Softwindows 95.

Thanks for all the replys as they are very encouraging.
