Hello - trekiej - 09-13-2019
I wanted to say hello and I wish all the best for a new year.
I am looking to buy a machine, maybe this fall or next year.
Browsing the forum, I found out that there is Emulation in MAME for running Irix.
I hope to check it out soon.
Mame has a number of .213 and hopefully is a sign of better performance.

MAME performance is quite slow and really only a proof of concept, though Ryan Holtz is a machine and he's proven to be productive as fuck.

A Desk Side is my dream machine. It looks like it could be a Hackers Paradise.

The O2 was the machine I wanted to learn all of my programming on back when it was $5902.
I think this was 1996.
I have had C and C++ and would like to get back into programming.
It has been a long time since I did any programming.

As someone who has both of those machines, I'd recommend the Octane. It's a good choice for a first SGI system as even lower-end configurations run IRIX fairly well and they're very upgradeable, too. Upgrading an O2 from an R5K to an R10K requires a number of parts that are harder to source. The Octane will do everything the O2 can and more.
One caveat is that the O2 can use some of its main RAM as texture memory, whereas the Octane needs to have it present on the graphics option. This might not matter to you if you're just using the system for general programming purposes, but if you want to do anything graphics-related, it would be good to have.

You can use any PS/2 mouse and keyboard you like with the systems. That said, SGI peripherals do occasionally show up here, and on eBay as well. The prices aren't usually too high.

When do I need to worry about Keyboard and Mouse compatibility?

You have to worry about keyboard and mouse compatibility if you buy one of the older systems. IIRC, the Personal Iris and Iris Indigo use proprietary keyboards and mice.
