The ALPS Interactive GAME PAD "The PS3 Boomerang controller" - Irinikus - 08-04-2019

There's allot of talk online as to how ergonomic this controller would have been, if it was in fact released by SONY.

So I went ahead and did the next best thing, and bought a "NEW OLD STOCK", ALPS Interactive Game Pad for Sony PlayStation 1 PS1/PSONE.

This is more than likely the controller which inspired the boomerang, and it is made by ALPS, the company that was contracted by SONY to make the standard controllers for their PlayStations.

It will be really interesting to see how good the ergonomics on this thing are! (I will then be able to debate the Boomerang Controller properly!)

This ALPS controller found it's way into the Smithsonian Design Museum:

The color of that plastic looks really nice! I'm really not sure about the ergonomics of it, though. I'll be curious to know what you think of it after a bit of use.

My controller arrived today and here are some pics. (It's huge, but rather comfortable!)

This is how it compares in size to the N64, PS3 and PS4 controllers:

Here's how it fit's in the hand. (I have rather small hands though.)

It supports the palms of your hands far better than the standard PS controller does and the D-pad is awesome!

It has an exceptionally good build quality!

Never was a fan of that early boomerang design personally. I like the PS3/4 style just fine the way it is, but neat relics of an older era, nonetheless.

I can't wait to see how it performs in Tekken 3!

This was posted to me from the UK today: (I should receive it by Friday!)

It's missing the boot disc and the access card, a special memory card required to boot the NetYaroze software in the console. BTW it's the best region free console without need to mod.

I'm aware of the missing components and may try to source them in the future (Not really a big deal for me, as I don't really intend developing anything for it). I bought the machine more for the look. (As it looks really cool!)

The standard playstation controllers *always* make my thumbs raw. Something with the design, reliably after a few hours they always hurt my hands :/

ALPS is contracted for a lot of things, including ThinkPad keyboards, at least when IBM was in control.

Although ALPS and NMB are probably too expensive for Lenovo and HP these days. They probably are all just LITE-ON and maybe Chicony.

The PlayStation arrived today, so at some point the testing will continue, I just have to get some games for it, and figure out how I will get it's output running through the Indy's video input.
