Hi,
Currently running on the above SGI hardware (very old) and like to migrate the application to more modern SGI platform, what choices is available?

My first instinctive response to say to you is: "Keep it"
IRIX 3.3.1 is old and a 4D PI running such an IRIX version is quite rare.
If you would really like to upgrade, there is 4.0.5 and 5.3. I then would choose IRIX 4.0.5 because except for a few harmless Y2K bugs it runs fine and feels snappy and more modern, in contrast to IRIX 5.3: I have a PI 4D/35 myself and the system decides to kill init every time i start netscape. I since then regretted moving to 5.3

Maybe with "more modern platform" he simply means a newer machine?
I'd still stick with no newer than IRIX 4.0 to have a better chance that any application designed for 3.3 will still work. Something like an Indigo or Indigo2 R4400 will run IRIX 4.0.5 and is a pretty significant speed bump over an IP6 Personal IRIS. And much smaller, less noisy etc etc.
Ian Mapleson will be happy to hook you up.
