10BaseT device on a modern LAN -- Performance Impact on other devices? - callahan - 03-23-2019

A question for the network gurus. Of course all ethernet is backwards compatible to 10BaseT, so you can plug an Indy into most modern hardware withou issue. But does doing so lower the overall speed of the network?

In my specific case I have an Indy, I2, and Octane connected to a 5 port 10/100/1000 switch that is daisy-chained directly to my main router/wireless access point. When the 10Mbit devices (or the 100Mbit Octane) are active in the network, will it degrade overall network performance?

If you use a switch, then there will be no performance impact.

If, however, you still use a hub, throw it away and get a 10$ switch from the nearest electronics store. Seriously

If you're running through a decent switch, it should mean no impact on other devices. Switches can handle different connection speeds concurrently.

My Indigo2 has been upgraded to 100Mb Ethernet, however my Fuel, PC and NUC (all connected through the same switch) continue to function at Gigabit speeds.
