might be a better idea to try to modify the shadow file to remove the password from it,
could this be done with a network install?
I appreciate you guys trying to decrypt the password.

I won't be able to help you with that if you can't get LOVE or NetBSD to work. I don't use VMs, and I refuse to learn how to do this crap on macOS or Windows. Last time I attempted it on GNU/Linux I had to compile my own inetd and other tools because of how systemd and other shit continues to erase the Unix-like legacy of GNU/Linux.

When trying to install using LOVE I get this error not sure what it is about,
I'm using Linux as the "server"

this seems to be my issue
bootpd[51729]: ignoring request for server 192.168.1.93 from client at Ethernet address
any one knows how to fix that?

Sorry if this hasn't already been replied, I haven't actually read the entire thread, but if you have a bootable Irix CD, there's nothing you can't do to the filesystem on your hard drive once you've booted to the CD.

Does this mean that if I use Network install I can't modify anything on the drive? well that sucks then
but that also means I can't install anything either, since I can't get network install to even start, I'll wait until next week then, I have a plan to connect the ZuluSCSI as an external CDROM.
Thanks everyone for the help so far.

A network install is no different than an install from Irix CDs, you have complete access to anything on the computer's disks, you can add, delete anything. That's why the computer security industry says systems can only be protected from network attacks. If an miscreant can actually gain access to the physical system, there's nothing to stop them from doing basically anything they want to the system.

unless they are me, I can't access the damn thing

You can't login and SU to root? You don't know the root password? Otherwise, boot to an Irix CD, mount the filesystem, and you can do anything you want to the /etc/password file.

I am trying but the octane has no cdrom drive and I can’t get network install to connect.
