Need help getting an SGI gigabit ethernet pci card -
soviet - 11-25-2023
Purchased a branded SGI gigabit card from ebay it was 50$ and brand new so it seems was a good option.
The card is marked like "SGI 9470434 Gigabit Ethernet" inserted it onto the pci slot on my O2.
Booted the machine using IRIX 6.5.30 seems the card is not detected, "ifconfig -a" only show the onboard device.
Hinv will show a device in the PCI bus.
Need help figuring this out googled the part number but can't find any good info.
Attached pictures from the pci card and hinv output.

Sorry to tell you. But the O2 never supported a gigabit card and never will. It would overwhelm it and basically the system would just check out to lunch if it even did support it. The O2 only ever supported 10/100Mb cards.
You need an Octane or higher to use gigabit NICs.

True, but good luck finding one of those.
FWIW: I have a QL2342 card in an O2. That's 2x 2Gb/s FibreChannel. While it doesn't get anywhere near 4Gb/s transfer rates, I believe it will get > 1Gb/s, so the O2 should be able to saturate Gb/s ethernet as wll.

Does it actually work in one of your other machines? There's still the option that it's just broken. I have removed a bunch of these from my Origin200s (both copper and fibre ones), so I assume this card is absolutely supported in IRIX. In addition I know for sure that one of my Origin200s was originally used as file server with some of these cards installed, so this must be a supported configuration option.

Going to test it on my octane 2 and see if it works.
It should work out of the box i imagine no drivers required ?.

installed the gigabit card in my octane 2 and was detected out of the box.
now irix is giving me a hard time using network manager to disable the onboard port.
what is the best way to disable the onboard port (ef0) ?.

Strange that the O2 refuses to work with it and IRIX doesn't notice either. :-/

Yes is strange but O2 the card don't seem to load any drivers for it.
Installing it on an octane it works right away no need to do anything expect configure an ip address etc.
