SGI Indigo Keyboard adapter

SGI Indigo Keyboard adapter
Hi everyone,

some years ago there was a page at http://rshockley.dyndns.org/indigo.htm that contained schematics for a converter to attach regular PS2 keyboards to an Indigo machine. It also contained the source code and binary for the firmware that had to be flashed onto a PIC in that converter.

Does anyone happen to have a copy of that stuff lying around? It's nowhere to be found on the net anymore, and people are making big money off from selling converters on eBay (50$ for something that has a parts and hardware cost of maybe 5-10$). So I'd like to make my own converter, but for that I'd need those firmware files and schematics

Any help would be appreciated

Finding the schematics will likely need to be the answer either way. Looking at the listing the seller is implying that he is running out of stock and isn’t planning on producing more after these are sold.

I agree that the info needs to be found and posted so that folks can use those machines without their proprietary connectors.

Sure. I would attach it to that post but I think this is currently not possible, so grab it from http://dl.free.fr/getfile.pl?file=/NqE04cqQ

EDIT: argh, it looks like that archive lacks the PIC code. There are only the schematics.

Once upon a time I asked the author for the PIC code because as it is, the Indigo keyboard/mouse adapter doesn't play nice if your PS/2 keyboard and mouse are behind a (PS/2) KVM. I tried 3 or 4 KVMs, but no joy.

He never gave the source code to me, and I never bought more than one adapter.

Edit: it appears I have the hex files: keyboard.hex, keyboard_new.hex and mouse.hex

I've rehosted it on https://tudl1910.home.xs4all.nl/rshockle...indigo.htm
I do have the keyboard.hex and mouse.hex files: They are accessible in the page.

And thanks for the Nekochanner who asked the files from the original author in 2016 and hosted them, without him i wouldn't have them.

But Jan-Jaap, what is the keyboard-new.hex file? is it for later PS/2 type keyboards?

The web page said:
The following modified keyboard code allows for the selection of different country codes for international users. A modified version of the converter schematic allows for the addition of a dip switch to set the desired country code.

(by Thomas Jahns, I won't post his email here for obvious reasons)

Nope.

In one corner of my computer room I have a bunch of workstations of different generation, basically from 4D/35 to Octane MXE. All of these have analog display output and either "indigo style" or ps/2 keyboard and mouse. I want to cluster all of them on a KVM switch. As far as the display output goes, this is not a problem. But the "indigo" keyboard adapter doesn't play ball with the KVM.

I'm not sure USB is a solution here. Even if it worked with a KVM, those KVMs are usually USB + DVI, so I'd need ps/2->usb and vga->dvi adapter as well. That's a lot of adapters, and my experience with vga->dvi adapters has not been positive so far.

My need isn't IMMEDIATE, but I could see this being useful in the not-too-distant-future.

Did anyone manage to capture and archive the design? Because all of the links above are NFG - except for
the ebay listing, which does indicate that it's the Drakware adapter (and his site says "out of stock" without any
indication as to whether that's temporary or permanent). Did anyone ever approach him over releasing his design?

I'd be quite happy with the PS2 version, such as is described here:

https://wiki.preterhuman.net/Keyboards

I'd appreciate all-y'all bringing me up to speed on the state of these things.

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig.
You're going to get dirty. You're going to lose. And the pig likes it.

Just about everything from Iris 1000 to Challenge L Rack and a few beyond.

I've got a VGA->HDMI adaptor that works super well with my Octane, and I've also tested it with my HP-UX box and some old ThinkPad, even used it to do captures using a Magewell PCIe HDMI capture card.
I'm travelling now but, if you are interested, I can check make and model once I'm back.

It actually came with my Octane.
